The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently announced new COVID-19 protocols for travelers coming from the United Kingdom to the United States, but it is unclear how preventive the measures will be.

Starting on Monday, U.K. passengers must have a negative COVID-19 test taken within three days of boarding a flight to the U.S., the CDC announced on Thursday. In a statement, the CDC acknowledged the new COVID-19 strain found in the U.K., noting that the “preliminary analysis in the U.K. suggest that this new variant may be up to 70{058e1dd2cdcfd3f4a7ab95ac49950e5e7e49bef7a2cb3eb49cb2eb4822ddc38c} more transmissible than previously circulating variants.”

However, CDC researchers have said that testing three days before a flight would only reduce the risk of spreading the coronavirus from 9{058e1dd2cdcfd3f4a7ab95ac49950e5e7e49bef7a2cb3eb49cb2eb4822ddc38c} to 5{058e1dd2cdcfd3f4a7ab95ac49950e5e7e49bef7a2cb3eb49cb2eb4822ddc38c}, according to CNN. Dr. Paul Offit, an infectious disease expert at the University of Pennsylvania, likened the testing plan to “putting up a chain link fence to keep out a mosquito.”

The CDC said in an additional statement about the testing plan that such testing “does not eliminate all risk” but added that it can mitigate the chances of spreading the virus when combined with other measures such as wearing masks, social distancing, and self-monitoring for COVID-19 symptoms.

In March, President Trump suspended the entry of foreign nationals who visited the U.K. in the past two weeks. It reduced air travel to the U.S. from the U.K. by about 90{058e1dd2cdcfd3f4a7ab95ac49950e5e7e49bef7a2cb3eb49cb2eb4822ddc38c}.
